Huron Peak
(S. Winfield Trailhead)

31 May 2003 - by Layne Bracy

To reach the trailhead, head west on Chaffee County Road 390, off US 24 south of Leadville. At Winfield turn left, cross the creek, and park. We continued up the 4WD road for a flat 2 miles, then turned left(south) onto a trail clearly signed "Huron Trail." The trail winds up the forest, with snow obscuring the route at times. Above treeline, we found a large snowfilled basin to cross, where snowshoes were useful to minimize postholing. The trail winds up to the left around Huron, with intermittent snow patches to cross. Beautiful views from the summit!
