A Scout trip to Mount Whitney in 1971 hooked me. The view of the Hitchcock lakes and the Kern canyon fired a desire to return. I did, the next year, traveling from Onion Valley south to Whitney Portal. The following year, at 16, I hiked the entire Muir trail south to north with a 17 year old friend, and Yosemite to Tahoe the following year, solo.Over time I have concentrated on Sequoia/Kings Canyon.Most of my trips are cross-country, above timberline, moderate duration (9-15 days).I do not make a point of climbing anything that is not directly in my path. I'd rather carry fishing gear than climbing gear.
