moderated but non-subscribers can post, others are discussion lists!
Everyone can subscribe to lists not marked "members only" above.

To subscribe to any email broadcast list, fill in the blanks and pick
the list(s) you want at http://www.climber.org/scripts/mj_wwwusr
or send this one-line message to lists@climber.org:
    subscribe XXXXX FirstName LastName <YourEmailAddress>
Include the angle brackets around your email address, and use your real
name (see above for privacy concerns), and replace "XXXXX" with the name
of the list you want to join. Members-only lists may require you to put
a membership number between your last name and email address.

If you change your email address, you don't have to unsubscribe from the
old account and resubscribe from the new account! Send "help changeaddr"
to "lists@climber.org" for details - or simply fill in the blanks at
    http://www.climber.org/scripts/mj_wwwusr?func=show

To unsubscribe yourself from ALL lists at Climber.Org, send this one-line
message to lists@climber.org instead:
    unregister YourEmailAddress
No need to include anything other than your email address!

1. No one can be charged a fee to subscribe to any list or view any
web file on this service. If you have been charged, contact
   "http://climber.org/contact/admin"; to complain.
No one can use anything posted on Climber.Org email lists or
web pages for profit, nor can they copy it to a place where
   profit is possible. Don't plagiarize!

2. NO COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION! Assume your post
will be archived on the web and/or forwarded by subscribers to
non-subscribers. You are personally liable for copyright violations
based on your posts. We (the list service operators) are like the
phone company... no prior control of content, no liability. If you
knowingly post copyrighted material without authorization and there
are complaints, you may be removed after 2 warnings.

3. COMMERCIAL CONTENT IS SOMETIMES OK! If you know of a good climbing
related website, if you know of a good guide service, if you see a
good climbing movie or book, if you know of a store with a good gear
sale, feel free to post ON THE APPROPRIATE LIST. Don't post about
South American websites on the Rockies list, and don't treat any
list as free advertising to rake in the bucks. We're about sharing
information, and some climbing-related stuff involves money, but
list owners have the right to modify this general permission to
post based on their experience. If you abuse it, you lose it.

4. To give everyone a chance to speak without driving away those with
small mailbox limits, you can make 2 (two) posts per day, 4 (four)
posts per week, and 10 (ten) posts per month. You are also limited
to 3 out of the last 10 posts to a given list. These limits may be
enforced by software or by a human. (Think of it as talk radio where
no single caller is allowed take up the whole show.) These are the
default rules, but list owners can exempt their lists from this
restriction (as with list-issues) or alter the limits. Check each
   list's charter for details.

5. Probation: List owners can individually decide whether new list
subscribers can post freely, can not post at all, or must go through
a probation period during which their posts are reviewed by the list
owner before being distributed to the list. Don't take it personally
if you are temporarily moderated, it's how we keep spammers from
signing up and ranting before being kicked off.

6. Deliberate false posts or off-topic posts may get you moderated or
removed after 2 warnings. Don't expect a third warning, and don't
expect to be reinstated. The list owner decides if you are beyond
hope or if you have been rehabilitated, but will respond to public
opinion on the list. If you feel abused, contact us at
   http://climber.org/contact/abuse

7. Using a fake name or multiple names to avoid posting limits and/or
list charter restrictions on who can subscribe will get you removed
permanently. No warnings are required. This does NOT include posting
for someone else when they have asked you to, and mistakes by the
list owner will be corrected by an apology on the list. If you feel
   abused, contact http://climber.org/contact/abuse

8. Aliases: You must subscribe before you can post, except as noted in a
list's charter. This keeps out spammers, but in some cases it may be
inconvenient for people who have variable addresses where they work
(joe@what.com may point to joe@host.what.com for a while, then point
to joe@other.what.com, and keep shifting around). If you have more
than one email address, you may wish to be able to post from more
than one of them, while receiving list mail at only a single address.
For details, send the message "help alias" to "lists@climber.org".

9. We don't give out subscription information about you! List owners have
the option of requiring you to provide your real name when you subscribe,
but that information is ONLY used to help administer your subscription.
It will NEVER be released, nor will your email address be released. If
you send a broadcast to an email list, your email address and other
header information will obviously be revealed, but that is your choice
when you send the post. We will never add subscription information to
posts. If list owners or other officials violate this policy intentionally,
contact http://climber.org/contact/abuse and they will be removed.
NOTE: If you send information to http://climber.org/contact/roster
we will make THAT information available at http://www.climber.org/WhosWho/
but the roster (see below) is separate from the subscription database.

10. Plain text only! We have filters in place to strip out format encoding
and attachments, but they may not work all of the time. If you try to
send pictures, colored text, etc, don't be surprised if your post is
edited or is bounced. Editing will be done by software, not by a human,
and edited posts will be marked by the software. If the software can't
catch it your binary or formatted posts, you may be moderated after
2 warnings. If the software bounces a post, you can send it again
after removing the MIME or other encoding and editing the first line
to avoid the duplicate message traps. We ENCOURAGE use of URLs in email
messages: put your binary files on the web and tell people how to find
them. If you don't have a website, contact our webmaster at
    http://climber.org/contact/webmaster

11. Send only to those who may be interested. Cross-posting to several
lists is almost NEVER a good idea (refer to the off-topic rule
above). You become a spammer when we start getting complaints, and
you may be removed for it after 2 warnings: It's not because we don't
like your words, it's because most posts are off-topic for at least
one of the lists if you send to more than one. (It is also possible
for cross-posting to generate mailer-daemon loops and/or flame wars
that fill mailboxes and drive people away.)

12. Who to contact: SEE TOP OF FILE! You can send email to the owner of a
list, even if you don't know who that is, by using the "listname-owner"
address we provide. If that does not work, you can send email to
http://climber.org/contact/admin to reach someone who can
fix a list or track down the list owner. Admin is the address of last
resort. Don't send silly questions there or you will get no answer and
Admin will get a bad attitude. Send the silly questions (and all good
questions) to the list owner(s) instead of the system administrator.
If you don't get results, THEN contact Admin.

13. Getting automated help: Send the one-word message "help" to the
server at "lists@climber.org". You'll get back a message telling you
how to get even more help. Most people will find the command they
need in "help" or "help user overview", but for a complete list of
all help files which are available, send "help unknowntopic".
Help files are also at http://www.climber.org/scripts/mj_wwwusr?func=help

14. To review the currently available lists, send this one-word message
    to "lists@climber.org":
      lists
Look for a "+" next to the names of the lists you are subscribed to.
For a shorter listing, send "lists-compact" or "lists-tiny".
For more information about which lists you are subscribed to, and
personal options you have set for those lists (like "nomail"), send
    this one-word message to "lists@climber.org":
      show
For both the "lists" and "show" commands, you should send the email
from the account you used when you subscribed. All list charters
and these rules are at http://www.climber.org/lists/index.html
If you have access to the web, you can view all available lists,
see which ones you're subscribed to, set your personal options, etc:
      http://www.climber.org/scripts/mj_wwwusr?func=help

15. All broadcast messages are archived, but archives are only available
to the subscribers of the list the broadcast went to. To find and
retrieve just a single message from a given month, send
       archive-index LISTNAME yyyymm
where "LISTNAME" is replaced with the list you are interested in
and "yyyymm" is the 4-digit year and 2-digit month, as in "199912"
or "200001". You will see a list of all messages that month, with
author and subject and size and a sequence number like "199912/1".
To retrieve a single message, send a one-line command like this:
       archive-get LISTNAME yyyymm/n
to the server at "lists@climber.org", again replacing the list
name, the date, and the sequence number. For example,
       archive-get list-issues 199812/10
will send you the original notice that archives were available,
but with a primitive user interface.

16. If you'd like us to put your picture and contact information and
other stuff (like where you climb, mailing address, email, fax,
your home page URL, where you climb, what kind of climbing you do,
    etc), send email to http://climber.org/contact/roster
or fill out http://climber.org/WhosWho/entry.html - you are free
to supply as much or as little contact information as you want.
Information about you that you consider personal or private shouldn't
be sent to the roster; the intent of the roster is to publish data
about users of climber.org. You won't get in the roster just by adding
    yourself to an email list.

17. Trip announcements and trip reports are very important! There are
corresponding email lists and web pages for these items:
        trips@climber.org matches http://www.climber.org/trips/
      reports@climber.org matches http://www.climber.org/reports/
If you post an announcement or a report on one of the geographic
area discussion lists, it MAY show up on the matching website.
You can make sure it does by CCing the tripmaster or sending
    email via http://climber.org/contact/tripmaster
Similarly, if you enter a trip announcement on the website, it
should be automatically broadcast to the appropriate lists.
Trip leaders should fill out http://climber.org/WhosWho/entry.html
or send contact info to http://climber.org/contact/roster
so a link can be provided from their trip announcements.

18. What is Climber.Org? It's a domain name registered by Steve Eckert
and dedicated to the free exchange of information between peak
climbers everywhere. Steve set up the first crude (homebrew BBS)
version of such a service in 1993, the first climber's email list
in 1994, and it's been growing slowly ever since. Aaron Schuman
built a remarkably informative website with trip reports and links
to useful resources. The Colorado Mountain Club is a cost-sharing
supporter as of 1998, helping broaden the subscriber base and the
geographic area covered by our service. The American Alpine Club
joined us in 1999. If you know of other groups that would like to
join us, or if you want to contribute your own efforts and ideas,
    please send details to http://climber.org/contact/admin
